Not everyone has to work in an office, but a vast majority of today’s work force does. Spending eight or nine hours a day in a work environment is more time that some people spend with their families. Family members know our quirks and habits and accept us are we are. Unfortunately, co-workers and bosses don’t know us as well and may not be so accommodating.

Being late to work is a mistake that just about everyone in the office will see. This shows a lack of respect for others. Being late is not fair to others if everyone is required to work certain hours and someone is tardy repeatedly. This is also cheating the company, if they are paying you for the time that you are not there.

Everyone loves to surf the Internet, play games or just look up information. This is not to be done on company time. Breaks and lunch periods should be used for these activities. A lot of companies use special software to track this type of activity. This software shows the time this activity was done and the websites that were visited.

A lot of companies use e-mail as a part of their daily business. E-mailing friends and relatives or passing along e-mail jokes uses a business feature for your own enjoyment. This activity can also be tracked.

Everyone loves to gossip. Gossiping about the boss or a fellow co-worker makes for a bad work environment. Gossiping can cause hard feelings and possible cause arguments to erupt. Hurting someone’s feelings should not make you feel good and will cause you to be seen as a disruptive and disrespectable person to have in the office.

Bad customer service is something that most people never forget. This causes customers not to return to the company or use their services again. There is nothing worse than having a complaint sent to the boss about the treatment the customer received.

Side by side with bad customer service is a bad attitude. Customers and co-workers don’t soon forget if they are spoken to harshly. If there is a problem in your personal life, leave it at the door. While this is not easy to do, remember your job is important too.

The fastest way to get fired is stealing. Taking items that belong to the company is considered theft whether it is a pen or a computer. These items are bought for company use only. Sometimes a pen may end up in a purse or pocket. Return it immediately. If everyone walked out with just one pen, company expenses would soar, leaving less money for raise increases.

Everyone makes mistakes. Take care to correct them as soon as possible. Apologize, return a misplaced item or set the alarm clock earlier. There are very few of these problems that are not noticed by the boss. Continuing to make the same mistakes again and again, could be terms for termination.
